Today around noon EST, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ordered his defence minister to “move 10 battalions [several thousand soldiers] to the border with Colombia for me, immediately.” This move is coming in response to Colombia moving 1 mile into Ecuador and killing Raúl Reyes, a top commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a terrorist organization in Colombia that was started as a military wing of the Colombian Communist Party. Prior to Colombia’s invasion, Chavez had said that a move like this would be “cause for war.”
Chavez responded on his show, “Alo, President,” by saying that Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is a “criminal,” and that the killing of Reyes, a “good revolutionary,” was “cowardly murder.” He said that Colombia ”invaded Ecuador [and], flagrantly violated Ecuador’s sovereignty.”
Chavez has also ordered that the Venezuelan embassy in Bogota be closed down, and all embassy personnel are to come back to Venezuela.
Rafael Correa, President of Ecuador, filed a formal complaint with the Colombian government, calling the invasion “scandalous.”
I will have further updates if the situation progresses.
