Yesterday Hillary Clinton had an interview with FOX’s Bill O’Reilly. Clinton was talking about taxes on the wealthy, and what started off as a comment with good intentions (I think she did have good intentions) turned somewhat sour, “And you know what—rich people—God bless us. We deserve all the—opportunities to make sure our country and our blessings continue to the next generation.”
Here’s a copy of the interview (the quote occurred in the second video at 1:43):
So, what exactly was Clinton trying to say? What she meant to say was something like, “Rich people need to thank God for the blessings He has given us, and it is our responsibility to ensure that our country continues on a successful path for the next generation, while still keeping some of the blessings, that God has given us, for ourselves.”
Again, just like I said about Obama’s guns and religion quote, this wasn’t elitism, like many are saying. What it was was a VERY poorly worded statement.
The fact is, yes, it is blessed rich people’s job to help the poor (at least that’s what the Bible says). But it is NOT the government’s job to force this on people. God wants the rich to give cheerfully. But God wants the POOR to also give cheerfully. Bleeding heart liberals go around quoting the Bible as if God meant that to be applied toward government policies, but that’s just not true.
Again, in terms of Clinton’s quote, this wasn’t elitism, but it shows a side of her that was less than flattering, to say the least.
