Well, today hasn’t been a good day for New York Governor Eliot Spitzer (Democrat). He’s just made a speech apologizing and not saying much else about 20 minutes ago, after allegations that he was connected to a prostitution ring, Emporers Club VIP, came out today. He was caught on a federal wiretap that was trying to bust a prostitution ring.
Governor Spitzer was going by the alias of Client 9 when he called the Emporers Club VIP.
At this point, this is only a legal complaint, NOT and indictment. The affidavit (from the FBI) says that Client 9 met with a prostitute in room 871 at a hotel in Washington, D.C.. The hotel has not been named at this point.
Normally, federal prosecutors stay out of the state crimes of prostitution, but the Mann Act, which Congress passed back in 1910, made “it a crime to transport someone between states for the purpose of prostitution.” (New York Times)
Ironically, Governor Spitzer was the New York Attorney General years ago, and said, in response to the arrest of 16 people for operating a prostitution ring in Staten Island, “This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure. It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.”
Personally, I think that if this is true, he should resign. If he does not, I think he should be impeached. He broke the law
My prayers go out to the Governor and his family at this time.
