Congress Votes on Christmas – Another Waste of Time

OK, I’m going to go out on somewhat of a limb here and say that I disagree with the Republicans (and some Democrats in the House of Representatives.  So far, the Congress has passed so many non-binding resolutions it’s just getting annoying.

The latest piece of legislature comes from Representative Steve King (R-IA), House Resolution 847: Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.  (Read the details here:  Summed up, it says that Christians and Christmas are important – and I agree – but why is the Congress wasting their time saying this?

So far, a lot of heat has been placed on Jim McDermott (D-WA) for voting no.  He is cited as saying, “While the Republicans are passing a resolution celebrating Christmas, the president was vetoing health care for children. There’s a little bit of irony going on around here.”  No, although I didn’t agree with the health care plan laid out by the Congress, I’ve got to agree here – there are MUCH more important things the Congress could be doing than supporting a holiday.

McDermott went on to say, ” guess I’m the only guy left in Congress who still gets angry, but there are some things that are just not right.”

But Mr. McDermott isn’t as efficient of a representative as I’d have hoped either.  You see, he voted for the following:

House Resolution 635: Recognizing the commencement of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting and spiritual renewal, and commending Muslims in the United States and throughout the world for their faith, proposed by Eddie Johnson (D-TX) ( and H. Res. 747: Recognizing the religious and historical significance of the festival of Diwali, proposed by Addison Wilson (R-SC) (

Personally, I probably would’ve just voted for all of these if they came up (especially Christmas) – because I always have an opinion and I always want that opinion voiced, so I’ll never vote “Present.”  But still – these are wasteful and time consuming.

ON THE OTHER HAND…I am sick and tired of all the anti-Christmas political correctness crap!  If a city wants to put a nativity scene in front of city hall, then so be it!  If a city wants to put whatever in front of city hall, so be it, whether it’s for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve, Boxing Day – whatever – put it up.  If you don’t like it, don’t look at it – nobody’s forcing you.

So, I take this time to tell anybody reading this who think political correctness is the best thing since sliced bread, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
