Pakistani leader General Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency on Saturday night, suspending the Constitution, and firing the chief justice of the Supreme Court. This comes as an effort to prevent the court from ruling on the legality of his re-election against opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
Secretary of State Rice and President Bush made statements condemning the measure.
Now I’m making mine – this is a severe step against democracy, and I hope that this situation can be resolved easily without violence, but with democracy being upheld – so, Mr. Musharraf, lift the emergency rule, restore the Supreme Court justice (yes, this means kicking your cronnie out).
Will this wish happen, probably not.
