ACLU Picks Up Dennis Lennox’s Case Over Video Recording Ban at Central Michigan University

I’ve been trying to find some other stories, but I just can’t pass up another Dennis Lennox update.  I found this on RightMichigan.com, the ACLU is now backing Dennis: http://www.rightmichigan.com/story/2007/11/27/104146/59.  (Visit RightMichigan.com to see the ACLU’s full letter to the University).

Again, I am going to say that I do not support Dennis’s methods in this situation, but I am going to defend him here.  He has every right to video tape a PUBLIC official on PUBLIC property, especially an official who is running for PUBLIC office.  The University’s ban on video taping is both unconstitutional and unethical.  When you have a problem that is exposed, you fix the problem, you do NOT cover up the problem by taking  away rights of students!

I know I’m going to get comments saying that Dennis harasses people and deserves what’s happening to him (by Republicans as well as Democrats), but one thing is clear, if the American Civil Liberties Union is backing one of  the most outspoken conservatives in the state, his rights ARE being violated - so I’m going to ask that we ALL get behind Dennis on this one and join the fight to get back our rights!

It seems like you have a disdain for Lennox, which I don’t understand other than he is from a different Republican faction than you. But I agree, everyone needs to support him and his excellent work on exposing Gary Peters patronage “job” at CMU.

No, I really don’t have a disdain for Dennis - I just disagree with some of the methods that he’s used against Gary Peters, and I know that there are quite a few people (especially at Central Michigan who DO have a disdain for him), and I’m just clarifying where I stand because I don’t feel like having a fight over Dennis instead of a discussion about this current event.

And again, I support Dennis whole-heartedly as he battles for his freedoms at CMU.

Generally, the people who are the most effective and the real leaders are the most controversial. I doubt lefties are going to like the kid, though I’ve never met him; so who knows what he’s like.

  4. Nick Locke Says:

One more thing, this shouldn’t be as much about Dennis Lennox as it should be about Gary Peters. He’s the one that caused all this, though it was awfully nice of him as it is exposing the lefty bureaucrats.

Sounds like a Macaca moment to me. LEt’s see, guy runs for office, political activist films him. Public University bans it. Ka-Ching$$$$

  6. inkslwc Says:

I don’t see that - the university’s actions don’t impact Peters, and he really should distance himself from the university and it’s actions.

I just recently started following the story. The issue with the video camera is just one several very troubling maneuvers that the admin applied to Lennox. I believe they were entirely way too heavy handed, and their liberal use of policies and procedures should send a chill down everyone’s back.

His activism should have been embraced and welcomed and it was the perfect opportunity to create an atmosphere of debate. The admin choose to do the exact opposite, to squash it. That sort of toubling behavior by a force as powerful as the administration of a university should give everyone pause. I just finishe a piece on this…
